About University of Alberta:

The University of Alberta is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, with the purpose of serving the educational needs of the province’s population. The first degrees from the university awarded in Edmonton were in 1912 to A.C. Rutherford and H.M. Tory.

In 1917, it was renamed the University of Alberta in honour of the Late His Majesty King Albert I, who had emphasized higher education as a key part of his reign as King of Canada that would focus on technical education and innovation for economic development purposes. In 1884, Queen Victoria established Queen’s College at Kingston; however this college closed its doors in 1903 and its facility was converted into an agricultural college (Queen’s Institute).

The University has evolved into one of Canada’s leading research universities with over 50% of its funding coming from research grants and contracts. Its current president is David Turpin, who was appointed in 2016 following a review conducted by former President Indira Samarasekera (2006–2016) who negotiated with provincial governments to reduce tuition fees for students from low-income families.
